This is the same balm we use on every piece of leather gear before it leaves our workshop.
It’s a simple, tried-and-true recipe, batch made in small quantities in my kitchen using only natural ingredients. There are no dyes, no added fragrances, and no synthetic chemicals - just what leather actually needs to stay supple, protected, and long-lasting.
The balm is completely non-toxic and dog-safe. It’s technically edible (though we don’t recommend it for flavour), which means no worries if it transfers to hands, fur, or mouths. In fact it's an excellent moisturiser for your hands too! No residues, no off-gassing, and nothing that will dry, crack, or damage the leather over time.
All leather gear is shipped pre-conditioned, but like any natural material, leather benefits from ongoing care. Conditioning seasonally helps maintain suppleness, strength, and water resistance, significantly extending the life of your gear. If your dog regularly swims in the ocean or chlorinated pools, more frequent conditioning is recommended, as salt and chlorine can accelerate drying.
Used consistently, this balm helps prevent cracking, reduces stiffness, and keeps leather functioning beautifully for decades — not just years.
Designed to support a buy-once, repair-when-needed approach to dog gear.

Why Choose Solid Brass Hardware?
Solid brass hardware is the perfect complement to leather products, offering unmatched strength and durability. Brass is resistant to corrosion and tarnish, ensuring that it will maintain its appearance and function over time, even with regular use. Its longevity means fewer replacements, making it a more sustainable choice for your leather goods. Additionally, brass is 100% recyclable, making it an eco-friendly option that reduces environmental impact. By choosing solid brass hardware, you're investing in quality, durability, and sustainability—an ideal combination for both your leather items and the planet.
Why Choose Leather?
Vegetable-tanned leather is a natural, durable, and timeless material that synthetic alternatives can’t match. It’s crafted using plant-based tannins, biodegradable, and free from unnecessary chemicals, making it safer for dogs, people, and the planet. The leather I use is a byproduct of the food industry, not sourced from animals raised specifically for their hides, so choosing leather helps reduce waste while supporting sustainable practices.
Over time, it develops a rich patina that tells the story of its use, giving each piece a unique, personal character. Vegetable-tanned leather also breathes naturally, improving comfort and functionality. With proper care, it can last a lifetime — and when combined with repairability and our lifetime guarantee, it’s a sustainable choice that keeps gear out of landfill and in use for years.
Care
Care
- Rinse under fresh water after use in the ocean.
- If your item becomes dirty, simple give it a gentle scrub in warm soapy water, leave to dry in the sun, then thoroughly condition to prevent the leather losing it’s natural oils.
- Condition regularly using a natural non-toxic leather balm. The newer the item, the more frequently it will need conditioning. Aim for monthly for the first 3 months, then bi-monthly for 6months, then bi-annually. If well conditioned, your items should never dry out or turn brittle and will last a lifetime.
